Trying to break into publishing today is a bit like trying to make it as a musician back in the day. You start small and build yourself up gradually. Consider this short story my first gig as the opening band for the act booked at the Decatur Alabama Moose Lodge:
𝘼𝙘𝙞𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙊𝙯𝙮𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙨: 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙙 𝙍𝙤𝙬
When Donal McCallister returns to his old neighborhood, he confronts what he could have become after coming face-to-face with one of the few survivors of his gloriously misspent youth. A story of compassion, the wretched, and the deadly consequences of irresponsibly mixing the prose of Percy Shelley with high-powered hallucinogens.
It was published primarily as a tool to figure out how to navigate the mechanics of working Amazon’s publishing apparatus, but I would not have went live with it if I was not proud of the work. Written with humor and empathy, it is inspired by a chance meeting with an old friend long ago whose life had really taken an awful turn. He had become a person I would never normally have associated with, yet in my mind, he was still the person I knew before going bad.
I hope you take the chance to enjoy it!
